ABOUT CASTLES CAN FLY 2.0

In 1993, Alvin Lee had a burning passion for sandcastle building while spending time with his son , niece and 3 nephews.

He believed that the joy and beauty of creating sand sculptures with one’s own hands, while feeling the tactile touches of the seaside, should be shared with everyone.

Alvin had always been creative and imaginative, and he dreamed of building as many sandcastles as possible with others.

But Alvin realized that existing resources for sandcastle building were limited. The tools, molds, and templates available were not efficient or practical enough to create impressive sandcastles within a short period of time. Alvin was determined to change that and set out on a journey to build a better sandcastle-building experience.

After some months of research and prototypes making, Alvin invented and patented a kit that revolutionized the way sandcastles were built. This kit included innovative tools, molds, and templates that made the process more efficient and enjoyable. 

Alvin was determined to share his invention with the world, and in 1998, he showcased his creation at the New York Toy Fair, where it won the top Toy award of the year prize.

And so, Castles Can Fly was born. It became more than just a brand, it became a movement. Castles Can Fly provided a comprehensive outdoor experiential education training program for all ages, with a focus on freedom, innovation, and mastery. The program offered a wide range of hardware and tools, as well as facilitation methods to reflect on the experience and translate it into practical mindsets.

Castles Can Fly was not just about building sandcastles, it was about mindfulness, meaningful play, and storytelling. The brand’s purpose was to provide creative activities for groups, where individuals could freely imagine and create purposeful new designs.

Today, Castles Can Fly has become a symbol of creativity, innovation, and fun. It has inspired countless individuals to discover the joy and beauty of sandcastle building, and to embrace the process as a mindful and meaningful experience.

 

Thanks to Alvin Lee’s vision and determination, Castles Can Fly has become a brand that empowers individuals to unleash their creativity, explore their imagination, and become the hero of their sandcastle-building adventures.

The brand’s values were centered on the process, focusing on the joy of creating, exploring, and becoming the hero of one’s own sandcastle-building journey.

Alvin Lee, the founder of Castles Can Fly, has a fascinating entrepreneurial journey that began in 1993 when he invented and patented a sandcastle building system along with his son, niece, and three nephews. However, after failing to generate interest in Singapore, he decided to take his invention to Chicago, USA in 1995.

In the USA, Alvin Lee found a partner company that invested USD $1.5 million into licensing his patent. He stayed in the New York area to develop the commercial product, Beachworks, which went on to win the Toy Product of the Year in Oppenheim Toy Portfolio at the New York Toy Fair in 1997. This success marked a significant milestone in Alvin Lee’s entrepreneurial journey.
In 2003, Alvin Lee was invited by the Singapore government agency, MCYC, to start a social enterprise called Castle Beach. He built a two-story tall real castle on the beach in East Coast Park, Singapore, as part of the Castle Beach movement to promote family bonding, including with children and special needs community.

Alongside Castle Beach, Alvin Lee also established Beautiful Minds, which provides products and services in corporate training with a focus on outdoor experiential education, indoor facilitation, and creativity programs for corporate staff. Castles Can Fly, the book written by Alvin Lee, describes his innovation journey and the elements of creativity that have been integral to his success.

The mother company, Castles Can Fly, now has two arms – Beautiful Minds, the corporate development experiential education company, and Castle Beach, the social enterprise promoting family bonding. Castles Can Fly has also been licensed to two licensees in Hong Kong, Mauritius, Penang, and Brunei, showcasing the international reach and impact of Alvin Lee’s innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.
Alvin Lee’s journey is a testament to his creativity, perseverance, and dedication to creating meaningful products and initiatives that have positive impacts on individuals, families, and corporations alike.
